The House

In the heart of Rennes les Bains, this three-bedroomed house, with its spiral staircase and unusual shaped rooms has two double bedrooms and one room with bunkbeds.

On the ground floor is situated the dining room and fully-fitted kitchen with dishwasher, fridge freezer, electric oven and gas hob. Seating at the dining table is for six people. On the first floor there is a shower room, toilet, double bedroom and living room with TV, DVD and a selection of films and books.

On the third floor there is a bunk bedroom, double bedroom and bathroom/toilet.

All bedlinen and towels are included in the rental.

Carcassonne

The only fortified town in Europe still inhabited, full of restaurants and shops, it's definitely worth a visit - be careful if you have small children as you won't be able to leave without that ever essential plastic sword!

There are many more stunning castles to see in the area including the infamous Montsegur (pictured right), where in the year 1244 over 200 Cathars were burned alive. Most of these castles, which are now only ruins, are perched on the top of what seem to be impenetrable hilltops - not for the fainthearted.

Rennes le Chateau

Close by is the hilltop village of Rennes le Chateau about which numerous books have been written. Shrouded in mystery and intrigue, nobody knows to this day how a poor parish priest managed to entertain the rich and famous of Paris with extravagant parties. How could he afford to build himself a grand house and gardens and renovate with Italian craftsmen a church where the inscription over the door reads "This Place Is Terrible". What secret is Asmodeus keeping?

Other places to visit

Rennes les Bains is a spa town where you can swim in the thermal waters of the swimming pool or shower al fresco under the waters of the hot spring of the Bain Doux.

There is also a jacuzzi, hammam, full spa mud treatment and gym. Rennes les Bains has a pizzeria and bar in the main square, close to the house.

On Sundays a place not to be missed is Esperaza market, the social event of the week and meeting of the United Nations. There are many stalls selling local produce and the favourite occupation is to sit at the cafe and drink coffee, or something a little stronger.

Also in the area there are opportunities for horse-riding, canoe-kayaking on the river Aude, rafting and even an assault course!

If you want a varied choice of terrains we're in an ideal location as it's only an hour and a half to the fine sandy beaches of the Mediterranean, and in the same amount of time in the opposite direction you can be high in the mountains of the Pyrenees. We're even only two hours from Spain.

The nearest mainline station is Carcassonne where you can get the branchline (or more often the replacement bus service) to Couiza.

From Carcassonne direction: Through Limoux to Couiza turn left at lights and head towards Rennes-les-Bains.
